Tuxes vs. Suits

Tuxes are what most people think of when they think of a menswear look for a wedding–a black suit with a satin lapel and a matching satin “tuxedo stripe” down the side of the pant leg. They can be worn with any style shirt, but traditionally they are worn with a white shirt with pleats near the buttons. Our most popular tuxedo is by Couture 1901, and with its timeless look, it’s easy to see why.

There are a few different lapel styles for tuxedos–peak and notch to name a few, but shawl lapels are what are currently trending. A shawl lapel (see the maroon tux below) is a sort of rolled collar that is one continuous piece from the button on the front all the way around the neck to the button-hole on the other side at the waist.

Suits can be two (jacket and pants) or three pieces (jacket, pants, and vest) and are usually made from a lightweight wool or linen depending on the season you’re shopping for. They generally have a notch lapel that features a little notch cut out of the collar near the collarbone. While suits are considered less formal than tuxedos they are becoming more and more popular for weddings, and they come in a lot of interesting colors. Right now rich earthy tones like our Hunter Green Luka suit, burgundy Camden/Brunswick Sand Allure Men’s, and Brown Archer by Ike Behar are super popular. If all-over color scares you a bit, go with a classic neutral suit like our charcoal Alexander or black Jasper suit, and add a pop of color with your tie and/or pocket square.

To Rent or Buy, That is the Question

The suits and tuxes in this post are all available for purchase and rental, and you really can’t go wrong with whatever you decide. Renting is a great budget-friendly way to look great on your big day and a great option to offer your groomsmen. But fear not, whether you’re renting or buying, our prices generally range between $190-$479 so you’ll look great without breaking the bank. We’re proud to say that our clients tell us consistently that we are the best value in menswear anywhere in Raleigh, NC, and surrounding areas. Rentals make everything super easy, no clean-up required, just pick it up the week of the wedding and drop it back off the following Monday, it’s that easy. If you decide to purchase, the best part is that your tuxedos or suits can be sent directly to your home as well as individual groomsmen, fathers, and grandfathers!

How to Accessorize Your Wedding Look

Unless you’re going for a laid-back unbuttoned look, it’s safe to start by choosing a tie. These days, you can choose between a long necktie or a bowtie–and yes, you can wear a long necktie with a tuxedo too. If your wedding is black-tie or white-tie, your color choice is already made for you, but if not, the sky’s the limit. Accessories are a great way to incorporate your wedding colors into your look. If you have a traditional bridal party, it’s a good idea to match the ties for the groomsmen with the color of the bridesmaids’ dresses to keep the whole look cohesive. And, because we can also take care of your bridesmaids, it’s easy to find the PERFECT match.

Pocket squares are another fun menswear accessory that gives the whole look a little flare. We recommend matching the pocket square to the tie or going with another color or pattern that complements it. Accessories are also a great way to set the groom’s look apart from the rest of the bridal party. Select a different color or pattern to make your look pop. It’s also worth mentioning that ties and pocket squares make great gifts for grooms, groomsmen, and dad–just sayin’.

Pro Tip: If you’re the Best Man, be a hero and offer to bring the bride’s dress along with you when you return your tuxedo to be cleaned and preserved while the bride and groom are away on their honeymoon.

We know, you’ve got a lot to do. That’s why Savvi makes it easy to do things all in one location! We can’t wait to dress you and your wedding party–see you soon!
